“Making Nachbarschaft”
A Discussion about Architecture and Integration
Tuesday, 8 November 2016
In the round table panel “Making Nachbarschaft” the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Künste takes up a discussion about which contributions city planning and architecture can make toward furthering the integration of refugees. Architect and Akademie member Matthias Sauerbruch has invited experts to talk about the steps necessary after “first accommodation”. The discussion builds on questions which were raised by the exhibition Making Heimat. Deutschland, Arrival Country, shown in the German Pavilion at the International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, realized by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum.
Demands on politics have already been made, calling for participation, a social mix, and sufficient and affordable living space. How can a city be designed so that integration into urban society succeeds? As old and new city-dwellers increasingly share space and lifestyles with one another, how can communities and states moderate and coordinate social processes? What potential do new citizens have to offer to the development of existing communities?
Panelists:
Anne-Julchen Bernhardt, architect
Peter Cachola Schmal, director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM)
Regula Lüscher, Berlin Senate director of urban development
Florian Nagler, architect
Stefan Rettich, architect and city planner
Introduction and moderation: Matthias Sauerbruch, architect, member of the Akademie der Künste
