13 March 2017
Kunstpreis Berlin Jubiläumsstiftung 1848/1948
(Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948)
Grand Prize Awarded to Emin Alper in 2017
Awards Ceremony on 18 March at the Akademie der Künste
This coming Saturday the Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948 Awards take place at the Akademie der Künste. The governing mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, will award the prizes together with Jeanine Meerapfel, president of the Akademie der Künste. Endowed with 15,000 €, the Großer Kunstpreis Berlin (Berlin Art Prize: Grand Prize) goes to Emin Alper in 2017. With his two films, Tepenin Ardı – Beyond the Hill and Abluka (Frenzy), the Turkish filmmaker has shown himself to be an exceptional cinematic storyteller, whose understanding of the inner workings of his protagonists has developed into a profound portrait of Turkish society torn apart by everyday violence (a screening of Tepenin Ardı – Beyond the Hill will be presented the evening before, on 17 March, see below). Andres Veiel will hold the laudatio for Emin Alper. Rosa von Praunheim, director of the Film and Media Arts Section, will host the evening event.
Other Berlin Art Prize awards, endowed with €5,000 each, will be presented to six additional prizewinners: the sculptor Axel Anklam will be honoured in the Visual Arts Section; in Architecture the award will be presented to the Spanish architect Francisco Mangado; the Music Section is honouring the composer Elena Mendoza, also from Spain; the writer Annett Gröschner will receive the prize in the Literature Section; Valery Tscheplanowa will be honoured for her acting achievements in the Performing Arts Section; and the Greek filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari will be awarded the prize in the Film and Media Arts Section.
The Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948 was founded by the Berlin City Council in 1948 to commemorate the 1848 March Revolution. Since 1971, the Prize has been awarded by the Akademie der Künste on behalf of the federal state of Berlin. In recent years, Grand Prize winners were Frank Castorf (2016), Sherko Fatah (2015) and Mathias Spahlinger (2014) (see the press release from 18 January 2017).
