Lecture by Volker Staab in the Akademie series
On the Duty and the Power of Architecture

On 19 January 2022, architect and Akademie member Volker Staab will speak at the Akademie der Künste about current projects and about the responsibility of the built environment and how it impacts our lives. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with the Berlin architect Hilde Léon, who is also a member of the Akademie der Künste. This event of the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Künste continues the lecture series “On the Duty and the Power of Architecture”.

Volker Staab founded Staab Architekten in Berlin in 1991. The focus of their work is the planning and execution of public buildings for culture, education and research, as well as office and administration buildings. Compressing the complex conditions of architecture into a simple form is a key concern in this regard. In Berlin, Staab and his office are currently working on, among other things, the extension of the Bauhaus Archive, the Clayschule in Berlin-Neukölln with its emphasis on music and the seminar building for the House of the Wannsee Conference. In 2021, Staab Architekten’s design won first prize in the competition for the new Finance Ministry building.

Volker Staab (born in 1957 in Heidelberg) graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich with a diploma in 1983. After winning the competition for the Neues Museum in Nürnberg in 1991, he opened his own office, Staab Architekten, in Berlin and has been working in partnership with Alfred Nieuwenhuizen since 1996. Staab has held guest professorships at the TU Berlin, FH Münster and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, and in 2012 he was appointed to the chair for design and spatial composition at the TU Braunschweig. His office’s work has received numerous awards. In 2008 Staab received the Federal Cross of Merit and in 2011 the BDA Grand Prize. He has been a member of the Akademie der Künste since 2005.
