Manfred Krug: A Star in the East and West
The Akademie der Künste opens the Manfred Krug Archive
Tuesday, 22 October 2024, 7 pm, Hanseatenweg
An event is being held at the Akademie der Künste on 22 October to mark the opening of the archive of singer, actor and author Manfred Krug.
Manfred Krug’s (1937–2016) inimitable style made him one of the few stars in East Germany. Be it as an actor, jazz singer or entertainer, he captured the imagination of millions of people. His films, which include Auf der Sonnenseite (On the Sunny Side) and Spur der Steine (Trace of Stones), now occupy an important place in German film history. After moving to West Germany in 1977, he quickly won the heart of audiences there too, whether as a lawyer in the series Liebling Kreuzberg, written by his friend Jurek Becker, or as an inspector in the crime show Tatort.
The Manfred Krug Archive contains photos and production documents relating to Krug’s film and television roles, including Beschreibung eines Sommers (1962), Das Versteck (The Hiding Place, 1976), Auf Achse (1980–1996), Tatort (1984–2001) and Liebling Kreuzberg (1986–1998), his concerts and records, manuscripts of his books, an extensive collection of letters, diaries and other biographical documents, and presentation copies of works by Jurek Becker, Wolf Biermann, Stefan Heym and others. The archive has been catalogued in depth and can be accessed for research purposes here.
Director of the Archives Werner Heegewaldt will give a welcome address at the opening ceremony. This will be followed by contributions from singer Uschi Brüning, Manfred Krug’s daughter Stephanie Krug and his son, Daniel Krug, his editor Krista Maria Schädlich, the last head of the Amiga record label, Jörg Stempel, and the director of the Film and Media Arts Archives at the Akademie der Künste, Torsten Musial, who will all share their memories of the artist. Stephanie Krug and Daniel Krug will read from their father’s letters and, in conclusion, Uschi Brüning will sing songs from the concerts she performed together with Manfred Krug.
