Excitation Mechanisms and their Consequences
Academy Discussion as part of the series “Freedom of Art”

Manos Tsangaris and Anh-Linh Ngo in discussion with Romy Jaster, Renate Künast, Geraldine Rauch, Simon Strick
Tuesday, 29 October 2024, starting at 7 pm, Pariser Platz

Polarizing opinions and collective states of agitation seem to dominate current discussions in our society, particularly in the cultural sphere. A nuanced examination, which is essential for an open dialogue and for ensuring creative freedom, is frequently lost in the process. The result is a public debate that becomes one-sided, with taboos that exclude differentiated and critical perspectives, leading to a marginalisation of voices that provide balance.

Akademie President Manos Tsangaris and Akademie Vice-President Anh-Linh Ngo discuss with Romy Jaster, philosopher at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Renate Künast, Member of the German Parliament, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, Geraldine Rauch, President of Technische Universität Berlin, and Simon Strick, cultural and media scholar, shedding light on the mechanisms behind current examples and the underlying social developments.

How important are differentiation and empathy in public discourse, and what is the role of the media? What means of de-escalation are available that can help counteract social division? How can we return to a constructive and pluralistic culture of debate and discourse?

In a series of events taking place in autumn 2024, the Akademie der Künste will examine the discursive and legal framework of artistic freedom. The opening event „Freiheit der Kunst: Grundrecht und Versprechen“ took place in September. Among the events to follow are: 12.11. (film screening No Other Land) and 28.11.2024 (DIE VIELEN on new cultural strategies to counter right-wing extremism).
