On 1 May 1966, a young German from a Hessian small town found himself in a New York jazz club. The saxophonist Albert Ayler was playing. Disconcerted and elated by the previously unheard music, the young man starts to hear the entire unholy mess of the present within these tones; the murder of Kennedy, the Vietnam War, the struggles of the blacks and the student protests. Spellbound by Ayler’s art of improvisation, in a frenzy of association he grasps the revolutionary energy found in alertness and anger. Tobias Lehmkuhl introduces the autobiographical narrative.
