Shortly before his death in July 2017, Härtling completed his last novel. Jürgen Becker, Katja Lange-Müller, Kerstin Hensel, Olaf Petersenn and the publisher Helge Malchow recall the long-time director of the Literature Section and read from his literary legacy. In Der Gedankenspieler, Härtling created an alter ego as an architect who spent his whole life dealing with architecture, literature and music, but now realises – towards the end of his days – that something is missing. Peter Härtling talks about life in old age with a great deal of feeling and self-irony.
