The Akademie der Künste is continuing the programme UTOPIA. Keep on Moving from 13 to 16 May. How do we remain sanguine or make ourselves upbeat in these fragile times? Journalist Nora Belghaus will be discussing this with writer Gabriele von Arnim on Monday, 13 May, as part of the Academy Dialogue series. The discussion will be based on Arnim’s book Liebe Enkel oder Die Kunst der Zuversicht, in which she looks at strategies for escaping the supremacy of chaos and stagnation. The focus on Tuesday, 14 May, will be on the utopia of kibbutz education. Growing up in a kibbutz has been described as an idyllic dream of freedom for a child – and as an experiment in restructuring the family unit. Pedagogue and historian Meron Mendel and film director Yael Reuveny will talk about the kibbutz movement as a utopian ideal and as a concrete reality on the basis of cinematic depictions of kibbutzim. On Wednesday, 15 May, Ursula Block, Nele Hertling, Nanne Meyer, Helke Misselwitz, Ulrike Rosenbach, Iris ter Schiphorst and Victor Pavel will enact a reading performance by Arnold Dreyblatt. The composition “Protocols of the Future” presents excerpts from the founding protocols of the Free International University for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research (1973–78), which was initiated by Joseph Beuys, Heinrich Böll, Klaus Staeck, Willi Bongard, Georg Meistermann and others. On Thursday, 16 May, author Uwe Timm will discuss with Martin Hielscher whether we still need utopias. Utopian social models play a crucial role in Timm’s work. His novel Ikarien (2017) reflects on utopias, on attempts to realise them, their failure and the way they become perverted. In the essay collection Der Verrückte in den Dünen (2020), Timm continues to ponder utopias, which, in spite of all their failures, are essential if we are to make the earth “a home for everyone”.

These dialogues, talks and readings are part of the event and exhibition programme UTOPIA. Keep on Moving, which runs until 26 May – it examines the nature of political, social and artistic utopias.
